Stone cutting notes:

The colored stones you find at many jewelry stores are often foreign cut. 

Most foreign cut stones are either cut for weight retention, because they are sold by carat weight, or for maximum face-up size.

Stones are cut for weight retention because they are sold by carat weight.  Weight retention cuts are cut deeper than normal or have bulging pavillions.  Either of these conditions can dim the brilliance (or sparkle) of a stone.

Stones that are cut for maximum face up size have large "face up" crowns but the pavillions are not deep enough to return light.  These stones are also lacking in brilliance.

Stones faceted by David Clayton are cut at the proper angles, based on the refractive index of the stone, to achieve maximum brilliance.
